brown goopy stuff?

I myself do not brew kombucha,
But Last month I was at a friend's house for a brewing party.

I was given some kombucha in a bottle.
I capped it and took it home, stuck it in the fridge,
And have only sipped a couple of times from the bottle.

Now my question is...
How long does this stuff stay good?
I hadn't had any in a while, but I just decided to take a swig, and my mouth was met with a glob of brown goop.

Quite unappetizing, but I'm not sure if that means that it has gone bad.
There is no apparent mold,

And I've read around a little bit, and it sounds like some "fibers" are normal to find in the tea.
But does this brown jelly like stuff count as a fiber?

any info would be much appreciated.

    Yep. Its actually a good sign and means that your tea is still alive! I personally done like the snot textured stuff in my mouth (Bleh!) so i strain it through a seive before I drink it. But you can drink them if they dont bother you (the ittle ones are for for me, its the beg ones that get me) and they are actually good for you!

      I've read that if you drink enough of the snot textured brown goop....that you'll turn into a scoby. :-P
      I don't enjoy the long stringy brown particles, but I do like the small clear jellyfish like globules.
      My Australian cattle dog enjoys brown particles, clear globules, older scobies, and an occasional swig of kombucha.

        As an afterthought ....
        I wonder if there's a Guinness world record for the largest swallowed scoby?

      Ahhh, thank you.

      I guess next time I'll make sure to strain it before I drink.
      Because I don't mind a little bit of snotty texture, but that one was huge.

        I use this little miniature wire mesh spatula I got in japan town (I think it's for shabu shabu or something) and pour my kombucha through it. works like a champ. tea strainer could work too.
