Hello friends,
I am brainstorming where to get a good gallon glass jar.
One idea i had was to go to the local supermarket and ask at the deli if they have empty ones that they had pickles in.
Any other good ideas?
I don't have a place locally to purchase them.
I would be interested in a good website too...

Thu, November 1, 2007 - 9:51 AMDo you have a Cost Plus World Market or a Container store near you. I think you would be able to find something at one of those stores.

Thu, November 1, 2007 - 1:05 PMYou could also try restaurants.
See if they have an empty jar to give away.
Or I just searched for container stores.

The jars I use I got at my local small hardware store. They are 3/4 gallon and have a glass lid on a hinge with a rubber ring for sealing.
For storing the Kombucha after it's made I use half gallon canning jars. They may also be found at hardware stores, especially during canning season, in cases of 6 jars.

Thu, November 1, 2007 - 1:44 PMTo get high quality food grade glass, I recommend Rainbow grocery - bulk section all the way in the back by the miso and oils, many sizes up to 1 gallon - or at The Container Store - they have 2+ gallon jars too, but rainbow is cheaper.

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 9:53 PMI have: recycled old pickle jars, bought some gallon pitchers with spigots on them at housewares stores and IKEA, and I've also found some at thrift stores! -
-
Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 5:53 AMhow do those jars with spigots work for you? Do you have any problems with the spigot? -
-
Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Sat, November 3, 2007 - 2:13 PMThe spigots are okay, but i wash them more frequently than others or else nasty stuff will build up in the bottom...

It is surprising how many people have gallon glass jars just laying around collecting dust. I posted a wanted add on my local freecycle page and got more offers than I could take. -

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 11:29 AMThe best place for glass jars for brewing kombucha is uline www.uline.com/Browse_Listing_8168.asp
you have to buy four, but the cost is only $20 for all four (including shipping) and you dont have to deal with any stuff inside em, or spiogots. they are the same bottles that all the kombucha culture sellers send you with a starter kit.
if you're brerwing kombucha, you will need extra jars soon, as you will want to brew once a week at least, and keep those scobies alive.
i scoured los angeles (container store, target, natural food stores, etc etc etc. all over) for glass jars and nothing was adequate till i found these

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Sun, November 11, 2007 - 9:35 AMI went jar hunting in Salt Lake City (nearest big city to where I live) a couple weeks back. Thrift stores, and there are many, had the best selection of Kamobucha-possible items. Almost every thrift store had at least one or two "sun tea" type spigoted, plastic screw-capped 1 1/2 gallon containers...for like about 1$ or 2$... and then I wound up with a large thick 6 liter glass Italian vase with about a 4 inch diameter opening on top. ...: $3, and well worth it. I use a small rubber-rimmed utility wheel as a cover, but one could use cloth held in place with rubberband or string...the object is to keep dust & stuff from falling in.
Another really good option is the ceramics section of the thrift store where large 2 gallon glazed ceramic food-grade crockery was available in a variety of colors, shapes, and finishes. In fantastic shapes like birds, and interesting textures... but smooth inside. Ceramics are what people used for thousands of years before glass became widely available. And these crocks cost no more than $3/@.
Later, at Smith's supermarket I spotted some very elegant large 2-3 gallon square glass food containers with glass lid that would be perfect, for about 20$....but by then I'd already gotten the beautiful shapely Italian glass vase. So it pays to make the rounds of the thrift shops for glass or ceramic.

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Mon, May 11, 2009 - 10:59 PMYou do not want to brew kombucha in a ceramic container...there have been links to lead poisoning. -
-
Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Mon, May 11, 2009 - 11:03 PMNot if the ceramic is certified lead-free. I use a lead-free ceramic water container with a spigot I purchased from Rainbow Grocery in S.F. Works great.

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 1:46 AMI've gotten free jars from local grocery stores. Places with a deli that serve olives are a good bet. Some olive brands come bulk in glass gallon jars. Pickled products as well. A friend of mine picked up a jar or two from the Costco deli. You just have to ask if they'll save them for you and check back frequently if they agree. -

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Sun, April 3, 2011 - 6:44 PMI work in a nursing home that recycles and they have 4 litre glasspickle jars that go in recycle bin. I believe 4 litres is close to if not a little more than a gallon . They have no problem with me bringing these home. Check at nursing homes to see if you can get them there. For the effort to wash them out it is well worth it they are free! Good luck

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Fri, June 17, 2011 - 6:11 AMI just bought three 2 gallon, wide neck jars from super wallmart. The neck is just as wide as the base. $10 each. Im not patient enough to wait around for used stuff, and my whole family is already drinkin kombucha. I bought 4 verry nice spigots online, drilled a 5/8 " hole in the containers, put in the spigots and sealed the outside with parafin wax. I am soooooo special! 8-)

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Tue, June 21, 2011 - 9:40 AMI asked someone at a local pizza/catering business if they could save a few jars for me and they've been able to give me a gallon jar about ever 2 weeks. The first one was from pickles and the second one was from olives. :)

Re: ideas of where to get gallon glass jars
Sun, April 1, 2012 - 2:29 AMI found this website for really nice glass jars with metal spigots (I know lots of people aren't too keen on metal but I'm not that fussy). you can even choose brass/stainless/chrome and pick the angle of the spigot. Certainly not cheep though. check 'em out here www.infusionjars.com/
